Visitor Abeka Homeschool Curriculum Review: I am enjoying Abeka with my kids. My oldest does the DVD's for all her classes, she is a senior.
She "does school" herself.
For my younger two girls (4th and 7th) I am doing the DVD for math, and I teach the other subjects independently. I am not the best at Language (grammar),so next year I may also have them do the DVD for that subject.
My son is 7 and is in 1st grade. He is very advanced, so he is doing 2nd and 3rd grade work. I don't use the DVD for him,I feel it would slow him down, and he would be bored.
Sometimes I feel like my kids read through their work too quickly (science and History). I want to be sure they are absorbing what they read. I wonder if I had them do the DVD also for those subjects, if it would slow them down and make them think a little more?
(of course this would be applicable for all curriculum).
I love the Abeka math. The pages are brightly colored and hold their attention. I like how the front page of the math lesson introduce new concepts, and the back page is for review. This helps my kids a lot. This way they don't forget previous material.
I have heard a few negative things about Abeka (I personally have not run into these issues).
I have heard that the material is introduced too quickly. If your child is not good at math, they could get discouraged. My kids are not good at math. I just make sure to sit nearby and check their work. I have not had a problem with this.
I have also heard , that once the kids hit junior high, the Abeka does not teach the kids graphing. Some people at that time, switch to singapore or saxon. I have heard bad things about both Saxon and Singapore. I am going to have my children do some graphing along with the Abeka. I would much rather do that, than switch to another math curriculum.
