Abeka Program Review

by Jessica
(United States)

Abeka Program Review: I love the Abeka progam, but am starting to have questions.

Grades Used:: K- 5th
Dates Used: 2004-2010

Math is set up into a spiral learning format and we love it. A bit heavy, but we don't do home work or all the review unless there is a concept that more work is needed on. Very time consuming if we did speed drill, math, review and homework.

The Language is great as well. It touches every concept in a very organized manner.

Spelling is good as well. I have learned to set up my own system to teach the lists individually each week to prepare for her test on Fridays. I think they could do better in the teachers manual, but it is easy to set up your own flow for the week.

We enjoy the Heath, Safety and Manners books. Designed to guide students toward good mannerism and ethics. To build good character and how to care for our bodies.

History. YIKES! I see so many good reviews for History. I think it is overload. All our US History was learned the first few years of school. The years she will barely remember. And the most important history. 4th grade took its toll on us. 5th grade is Old World History and is again bombarding us with so many names and unfamiliar territory and information. I feel dumb trying to teach it.

Learning the greatest mountains and rivers and such is great. So many other things thrown in with it is overwhelming us. I have my child read it and we discuss what we read. Then we use You Tube just to get a visual. I guess my child is getting exposed to a lot, but so much so fast and such unfamiliar things that I do not know what expectations I should have for her to grasp it all.

I feel it is going in one ear and out the other no matter how fun or detailed I try to present it. It is the one subjects that has made me question f we should stay in the Abeka program. I wish there would be more spiral learning in this subject as well.

Abeka History

When teaching the upper grades it is a repeat of the younger. Each year they expand on the previous years making it easier to teach multiple grade levels.
