Horizons Math Curriculum is Just Okay

by Amanda
(Palm Coast, FL)

Visitor Horizons Math Review: We are currently using Horizons grade 2 math. My daughter should actually be in 1st grade according to her age, but math has always been one of her strong suits, so we decided to go one grade level higher.

For us, Horizons Math has been just okay. It is neither too hard nor too easy, but the constant repetition is tiresome and tedious to my daughter. We have skipped most of the daily drills because they are time fillers rather than actual teaching concepts for our needs.

I think this product is better suited for students who require additional practice when learning new concepts. If your child "gets it" quickly, then Horizons Math might not be the best fit. If however, your child likes to review concepts several times before moving on to something new, this might be the perfect program for you! The daily drills help to reinforce and cement basic addition and subtraction.

I also agree with other parents that for the younger grade levels, the teacher manual is not needed.

Horizons Math is Flexible
by: Lynn

I was surprised at your review because after using this with my daughters for 2nd grade, I found just the opposite.

The only "required" work is the student workbook, all the other things in the teacher guide and the worksheets are all optional.

This gives you the flexibility to do more review when you need it and very little when you don't. It is much less repetitive than a math curriculum like Saxon and my kids always liked it much better!
