Love Saxon Math

by Michelle H.
(Hendersonville, NC, USA)

Visitor Review: I have been using Saxon Math for two years now, and I love it. My children are mastering concepts that I never had to learn at their grade level.

Each lesson is the same. My kids understand what is expected of them. They are eager to learn and get their questions completed.

I do not follow the teacher book precisely. I find it takes a lot of time to do all the exercises. Once you understand the Saxon system, you can change it to meet your child's needs.

I make sure all my children does the practice exercises daily. We start with review or CD teacher, then we do the exercises. The Cd-rom teacher helps free up my time so I can work with my younger child. I recommend everyone try Saxon Math.

The first few months with this system may feel like a lot of time is spent on Math daily. Once you understand the system and your child does too, you can usually get through it faster.

Patience pays off. My second year with this system has been so easy! I'm loving it. I have no fear about my child acing the end of the year test.

Be Careful of Short Cuts With John's Books
by: Art Reed

John Saxon's math books remain the best math books teaching mastery of the concepts on the market today.

As a retired Saxon high school math teacher and former Director of John Saxon's homeschool support section for the upper level math books, I compliment you on your using them as well as your enthusiasm. However, I would also caution Saxon users that, while there are some acceptable shortcuts, most of them eventually lead to frustration and eventually failure. Most often not noticed until algebra 1/2 or algebra 1 when it is almost too late to correct.

I once had a school superintendent, whose teachers were not using the books correctly and whose test scores were falling, say to me "I understand,we purchased a new car and since we all knew how to drive, we did not read the ownwer's manual." To which I replied, "That is correct sir, except that you all are used to an automatic transmission and John's books are 'stick shift'."

Good Luck with your homeschooling.
