Teaching Textbooks for Math

by Heather
(San Antonio, Texas)

Visitor Review: Teaching Textbooks is THE most wonderful math program.

My family started (3 children) with Singapore math which we did not enjoy at all. Two of my children had used it in public school so I thought it would be a good place to start home schooling.

In our first year of home schooling, Singapore felt complicated and frustrating for the children as well as myself. We switched to Teaching Textbooks and we were all SO happy! Complete lectures, questions, quizzes, grade record keeping...all on the computer.

The program also offers the option after a child answers a question incorrectly to show them the correct solution to the problem. You can go to their website, click on the grade, and follow the examples to get an idea.

My children were even fighting over computer time because the LOVED doing math and have learned so much! You can purchase this program with a CD and a workbook or either one of those individually.

We only used the workbook when we traveled but were able to go back and enter the grades into the grade book.

Peace of Mind!
by: Nikki Brown

This is such a wonderful curriculum. We are currently doing Math 3 and Math 5 with 3 different children and they all love it. Even the ones who don't really like Math. The system works very well even for the frustrated learner. I highly recommend Teaching Textbooks! I have used Math-U-See and BJU Math and this is our favorite!

I thought it was great until now...

I loved the style of this curriculum. My reluctant 4th grader changed from tears to thrills. I liked that Algebra was separate from Geometry.

BUT, now my 11th grader took the pre-test for entry into community college to take dual-credit courses. He did WELL in Teaching Textbooks and had completed Algebra 1 and 2. He scored 41 on their test and this was at the Pre-Algebra level! So he thought he got symbols mixed up, and summer break had obscured some concepts, so he studied and took the test again. This time he got 54 at the Algebra 1 level. Yes, this was out of 100! The test which is computerized does not allow the taker to advance if too many Q's are missed. Before when I looked at reviews, I found some which sounded quite hostile so I discounted them. I am shocked, a bit panicked, and am now floundering. We wasted a lot of time. It uses fun computer glitzy stuff as gimmick and is quite dumbed-down. Look further.
